Course Overview

This course is prepared to enable candidates who are new to theelectronics industry with knowledge and hands-on skills for both through-hole and surface mount technologies. The participant will be exposed to classroom lectures and hands-on skill development through instructor demonstrations and real time instructor feedback. This basic soldering course will teach the basic principles of hand soldering both through holes as well as SMT parts.

Day 1: Introduction to Basic Soldering

  • Techniques for Creating High-Quality Solder Joints
  • Practical Session: Basic Soldering Skills and Tool Maintenance
  • Overview of Lead and Lead-Free Soldering
  • Introduction to SMT Reflow Oven, Wave Soldering, and Selective Soldering Basics

Day 2: Through-Hole Soldering Techniques

  • Detailed Identification of Through-Hole Components
  • Solder Rework Techniques for Through-Hole Components
  • Methods for Through-Hole Component Removal
  • Utilization of Hot Plate for Component Removal
  • Criteria for Through-Hole Inspection
  • Techniques for Component Mounting and Through-Hole Soldering challenges
  • Practical Session: Through-Hole Soldering

Day 3: Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Soldering Techniques

  • Detailed Identification of SMT Components
  • Solder Rework Techniques for SMT Parts
  • Proper Usage of Hot Air Gun for SMT Soldering
  • Methods for SMT Component Removal
  • Criteria for SMT Inspection
  • Techniques for SMT Component Mounting and Soldering
  • Practical Session: SMT Component Soldering

Day 4: Advanced Soldering Techniques and PCB Repair

  • Wicking Process for Cleaning SMD Pads
  • Basic Debugging Techniques: Visual Inspection and Identifying Common PCB Issues
  • Cheat Sheet for Common PCB Issues and Failures
  • Repair Techniques for Plated Holes and Solder Mask Recoating

Day 5: Assessment and Conclusion

  • Summary of Learning from Previous Days
  • Hands-On Assessment Using Provided Kits and Tools
  • Review and Feedback on Practical Skills
  • Conclusion and Next Steps for Continued Learning or Application of Skills

Methodology

For each of the topics covered, the students are first taught the safety precautions in electronics works, including soldering safety practice, technique required for SMT and PTH and proper usage of the soldering tools at soldering station. The participant will be taught in step-by-step and one-to-one basis on how to perform de-soldering and soldering of all types of through hole and SMT components in the PCB board. With 80% of training sessions focused on practical hands-on, each and every participant will be provided with the tools to practice and enhance their soldering skill.
